NYC Yoga Studios Archive

🌳The 2023 NYC Yoga Spring/Summer Outdoor Yoga Map is now available to use and share with all of your friends here. 📲Hint: Use your desktop web browser in order to click links and browse with a little more ease! Basic info and navigational directions function on mobile Google Maps.

🌲Legend: Each tree pose silhouette represents the studio or partnership that is hosting outdoor classes this 2023 season. This includes date and time of classes, links about the venue or park, and link for sign up if applicable. There is also an option to upload photos of your experience as outlined on the third screen shot included in this post.

🌲Why Did We Make This? The NYC Yoga Studios Archive has been tracking outdoor yoga locations since Summer 2020. This project was done in the effort to understand yoga’s spatial layout due to COVID-19, which forced many studios to close their doors for physical business for more than 1 year in NYC. While outdoor yoga’s existence pre-dates the pandemic timeline, the occurrence of it has seemingly increased since then due to the pandemics restrictions! You will also notice each entry is linked to our master archive contained in the Outdoor Yoga Collection on the Omeka platform. All entries include historical data, news articles, images, and some interviews with real teachers and studio owners which related to the preservation aspect of this project.

The criteria that meets this outdoor map project are the following: the teacher or studio regularly offers WEEKLY yoga sessions that span 6 consecutive weeks at a minimum in 2023. There are also some friends of ours pinned to this map that have asked us. Let us know, this is for YOU, New York City!
